Tunnel-Visions | 2024

This is the first series of paintings I made of the streets in Paarl after relocating a year prior. Walking around unfamiliar neighbourhoods for the first time I naturally started collecting photographs and references. A common theme among those were, these portal-like scenes I was particularly drawn to. I guess I was trying to communicate the feeling of ‘establishing familiarity’ to a new place. An emotional relocation as much as a physical one. Sort of like stepping through a portal and expanding the threshold. An act of discovering beauty in the dullness and comfort in the unease.
